It is calibrated in Celsius, so users who are only accustomed to working in the Fahrenheit scale will have a bit of a learning curve until they’re accustomed to the different temperature scale. The heat setting range is from about 200 – 480 degree Celsius. One potential issue with temperature setting is that the control unit does not remember the last temperature used, and it must be brought up to the desired temperature each time it is turned on.

The soldering iron connects to the control unit through a cable about 1 meter long, with the 5-pin connection made on the front face of the control unit. The soldering iron itself is a slim pencil-type iron that is comfortable to hold and easy to control. It features an electrostatic discharge (ESD) ceramic heating element and replaceable tip. Additional tips can be acquired from Aoyue, or tips made for the Hakko 936 will also fit this iron, though they don’t fit as well as the Aoyue tips do. From cold, the iron will reach working temperature within a minute or two. Credits to Darian for the following video.

The unit heats to 450C in about 2 minutes.  Early models of the soldering iron holder incorporated the solder spool reel, which was awkward in use, and it didn’t hold the iron well. Later models have the solder reel as a stand-alone unit, and the earlier problems withe the iron holder are reported to have been solved.

If you buy one from a retailer who has a good return policy such as Amazon, you minimize your risk of getting one that should have failed inspection at the factory, and you have a good chance of getting a soldering station that you’ll love. This station from Amazon comes with a 1 year warranty, which does not cover heating elements or soldering tips.

In all, Aoyue 937+ is a good soldering station for its price. For the value-conscious electronics hobbyist who wants to get the best value from their investment, this is clearly an excellent option to consider.  It is a great choice for many entry level hobbyists. But, if you are looking for a more durable soldering station, we strongly recommend Weller WESD51. Here is its full review. Here is another related review for Hakko soldering station.
